A story about overcoming challenges in your life.

I wanted to thank you again for coming to speak to our group. I was very excited for you to come back for two reasons. One, I wanted to be hear you again and I wanted my team to hear your message as I thought it was a powerful one that would impact them greatly. Two, I knew that this time I would break the board. You see, for me, not breaking the board that day many years ago was life changing. As I mentioned I had fibromyalgia for many years and my journey of healing and overcoming that challenge was a long one.

Too Many Meetings Destroy Morale and Motivation

A recent finding in a Clarizen/Harris Poll Survey said employed Americans spend over 9 hours a week on meetings and almost 50 percent of respondents would rather go to DMV or watch paint dry. The challenge is when they get in the way of people being productive. you need to take acton to change it. Meetings need to be eliminated that have no agenda or clear outcomes, are too long, no clear time parameters, endless PowerPoint slides, one way “data dumps” or a leader who runs on endlessly with material that does not impact you.

If you are the leader, you can make the changes right now. If you are not the leader, be the catalyst for change. Try NMW for a few months, if you try it, your people will never let you bring them back! Announce that every meeting must have a written agenda with clear desired outcomes. Each meeting must have clear starting times and ending times. Do not set up an hour meetings “just because”, because if you make it an hour you will fill the hour! Challenge people to set up shorter meeting times. Institute the stand-up huddles.

Do you have a “Got to” or a “Get to” attitude?

Did they say, “I signed and paid up for this thing, I’ve GOT to go.” Or did you say, “What a great opportunity to spend the day with 300 other farmers, learn how to be even more efficient. This will be fun, I am so happy I GET to go.” There is a chasm between got to and get to attitude. I walk my talk in this area too. I am blessed to have the opportunity to do what I do and the travel can get be difficult. What makes it easier, is for me to remember that I GET to go on the road and speak to these audiences.

Time, Money and Health – Don’t Die Young

When I worked with Tony Robbins for 5 years I remember enjoying the Living Health Seminar. I just pulled out my Journal from November 1988, the first time I attended. Here are a few of the ideas I have implemented the last 27 years. The key principle is – Immunity is the ability of the body to recognize substances as foreign to itself and eliminate it. What can you do to strengthen your immune system?

The Impact of First Impressions

In the old days before social media, an unhappy guest had a hard time venting to more than a few friends, writing a letter to the company and the Better Business Bureau. Now the game has changed in a big way. There are endless ways to post a bad review on all the 3rd party room booking sites like Travelocity, Trip Advisor, Expedia etc. YELP, Twitter and Facebook. Google Reviews are actually tied into each Motel 6 property on their own booking site Motel6.com. There is a also a new wave of sites like ConsumerAffairs.com, PissedConsumer.com and Complaints.com. Those bad review live forever on line and someone who had a bad experience is 10 times more likely to leave a bad review than someone who had a great experience is to leave a good one.

There are no secrets! You cannot HIDE!

Here are four keys to creating a great first impression.

Motion creates emotion – I just don’t feel like it.

She said it resonated with her when I mentioned in my program that the best gift she can give her family is to take great care of herself. She needs put herself first more often. She had not been doing that for many years she said and it impacted not only her physical appearance but her energy level, stress level and the example she was setting for her kids. Those are compelling reasons!

We went a little deeper on what it has cost her in the past, costing her now and what the implications are in the future if she did not change now. I asked how proud she would be in one year and what would change in her life for the positive? She gave me a great list. I asked her what has stopped her in the past from making the change? She said, “Sometimes I just don’t feel like it.”

Confronting Brutal Facts – Make a Change

Is this “PC” world we live in sometimes people dance around the truth and what is the reality of the current situation. Most of the people I have helped make changes in their lives did it quickly. They made a TRUE decision based on confronting the brutal facts of the moment. Master Jim Rohn told me that “disgust can be a powerful motivator!” Sometimes a little self-reflection on what is really happening can lead you to that moment of disgust.

Them moment when you make a decision you CUT OFF any other possibility. That is it. The decision to change is made and it happened in a moment

Limits on cell phones and games for kids

Our youngest Lucas just turned 11. For our other kids that milestone means you get a phone. He is of course excited. My wife is due for an upgrade to the iPhone 6 so he will get her old phone. Lucas and I attended a 4 week course at our church on his moving to adolescence an on to middle school. At the final class tonight they shared an idea I wish we would have heard before and implemented with our older kids now 15 and 17 .

It is a Cell Phone Agreement with the child. A simple search will produce many options for you and here is the one we are using. Both the parent and the child sign it so their is clarity up front. The goal is for them to have unlimited access and zero restrictions by the time they leave the house. The reality is they are not ready to have unrestricted access at a young age. The same applies for tablets. What limits do you put on your children?
