The CDC reports one in three of you (adults) reading this right now are prediabetic! The shocking thing is 80% do not even know it. They say by 2050 1 in 3 adults will be full blown type 2 diabetics – that is 88 million adults! Are you one of the 3? – you can go to DoIHavePrediabetes.org for an evaluation.
Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. Most people’s bodies naturally produce the hormone insulin, which helps convert sugars from the food we eat into energy that the body can use or store for later.
When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make insulin which is known as Type 1 or doesn’t use its insulin well, Type 2. Both raise blood sugar which can cause serious health problems.
There is no cure for type 1 diabetes, BUT there is for type 2 because it is a lifestyle condition you GIVE to yourself by eating badly (processed foods, trans fat, sugary drinks, and alcohol) and not exercising. Currently 1 in 10 adults are type 2 diabetics and the numbers are exploding, especially in children.
QUIZ – what percentage of the 38 Million diabetics are type 2 and gave it to themselves – 30% – 50% – 75%? Would you believe 95%+?
Not sure what the terrible consequences of living with and not REVERESING type 2 diabetes? 2x the chance of heart attack and stroke, eye damage, kidney disease, nerve damage in feet and legs and amputation. Yikes, that pain should motivate anyone, but it is not.
I say reversing because it is much more common for doctors to simply put you on medication in an attempt to MANAGE it. I spoke at an event for Eli Lilly where they hosted pediatricians who were treating CHILDREN with type 2 diabetes.
I asked them how many of their new patients and PARENTS left there office after being diagnosed understanding: this condition was not an accident. The brutal fact is their negligence caused this situation. They can reverse it with a game plan, personal accountability and belief. We will work together to achieve it!
Quiz – what percentage of patients did they confront? Nearly zero was the shocking answer. In a recent post I shared how the American Academy of Pediatrics is not suggesting more drugs and surgery – NOT lifestyle changes to battle childhood obesity. Hint – simple step is to cut out drinking “diabetes water”.
What is your guess what that is?
The answer is SODA = Diabetes Water. That should be what it is called. How many do you drink a week? You CAN reverse type 2 diabetes. Will it be easy? No. Is it possible? Yes.
You DO NOT NEED to just control it or manage it. When was your last blood test? What is your current blood sugar level? Are you overweight? If yes, how much and how long has that been the case? Why have you lived with it and told yourself it is OK?
Here are some tips to REVERSE prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.
Get serious right now and I suggest getting a coach and personal trainer. The research shows that making radical changes are much more effective then baby steps BECAUSE you get quicker results, and they will motivate you. IF you take baby steps, it takes a long time to see the result and most give up!
Cut the Crap to Lose Weight Now
Remove refined carbohydrates like bread, rice and pasta, sugary drinks and sugar in general from your diet. Quit drinking DIABETES WATER or any sugary drinks or juices! They all will spike your sugar levels way out of the healthy range and eaten regularly, cause lasting damage. What you put in your mouth is the most important. Keep a food journal and write down EVERYTHING that passes your lips.
Load Up On The Good Stuff
At least 75% of your plate should be filled with the good stuff – fresh colorful veggies, organic when possible, protein, healthy fat and fiber. Focusing all your meals on primarily LIVE foods is one of your best defenses against unhealthy blood sugar levels. My life hack has been to drink the low sugar green Get Switched On smoothie each morning and eat big, interesting salads. It works. Choose the highest quality protein source you can. Organic, grass-fed, pasture or sustainably raised is the way to go.
Keep fruit consumption moderate to low and focus on the lower carb fruits like berries. We don’t need to be afraid of quality, healthy fat. Think avocado, olives, nuts. Omega-3 fatty acids found in eggs and cold-water fish is critical to maintaining a healthy diet.
Move Your Body
Motion is Medicine. Dealing with high blood sugar and diabetes is no different. Sitting too much may be slowly killing you. Track your movement – Print my Get Switched On Energy Schedule and put on your bathroom mirror to keep you accountable to your new routine. Commit to a MINIMUM number of workouts a month, track it and live it.
Are you thinking, Chip, these changes to improve my lifestyle are going to be expensive? Look at it his way. How expensive will be if you get sick – really sick?
How much time, anguish and stress will it involve? When unmanaged, diabetes can lead to a myriad of health conditions and at worse amputations.
