Anytime is good, but the holidays are the perfect time to capture the <\/span>legacy of your parents<\/span><\/a>, grandparents and other beloved family members. Maybe you will be together live or you could always record a virtual call if they are not with you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Below is a list of potential questions to ask your parents, grandparents or anyone else in your family whose story you\u2019d like to preserve.<\/span><\/p>\n

Knowing the stories of your family can give you a deeper understanding of your parents and grandparents, but it also gives you greater insight into your own motivations and behaviors.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are a lot of questions here. You don\u2019t have to ask all of them, but the list is a good guide to get you started.<\/span><\/p>\n

I used them to interview my dad before he died. I wish I had done it earlier, BEFORE he was quite sick, going through chemo for lung cancer. Looking back I wished I would have pushed harder for him not to do chemo. After he began treatments he got steadily worse and did not survive long.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I did it with my mom (pictured above) when she was in great health. The recordings came out very well and we\u2019re glad we have them.<\/span><\/p>\n

It would be amazing if I had these recordings from my grandparents! I only have one from my grandmother that was made in the early 1990\u2019s when she was in her prime! She really loved to watch it, too, since she had never seen herself on TV.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s important to explain to your loved ones that you want to <\/span>capture your legacy<\/span><\/a> for future generations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Questions to ask your parents and grandparents<\/span><\/h2>\n

Keep in mind that some of your relatives will be more shy than others, so take measures to be sensitive to that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Use a tripod and put it aside \u2013 don\u2019t hold onto your camera. An external mic is a good idea if you have one or get on for under $20 very easily. Great sound and lightingh will really make a difference!<\/span><\/p>\n

A good way to start and get them warmed up is to look through a family photo album together and ask them to tell you stories. <\/span><\/p>\n

If you do intend to ask many of the questions, it\u2019s a good idea to plan on a couple different sittings.<\/span><\/p>\n

But remember, you can feel free to just ask the questions you think are most interesting.<\/b><\/p>\n

  8. Where were you born? Were you born in a hospital, at home or elsewhere?<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. How many children were in your family? What are there full names?<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. What are the earliest memories about your first home? What about other homes and places you lived?<\/span><\/li>\n
  11. What do you remember most about your childhood?<\/span><\/li>\n
  12. Where did you grow up? What was your neighborhood like?<\/span><\/li>\n
